A Season of Change

First, we wish you a happy holiday season. May it be a great time for you and yours. The holiday season seemed to come quickly this year. Maybe it is just part of the aging process, years sure do fly by fast. As we approach the end of the year with the grid, reflection has been made. We are still a small and young grid, but we have gone through many changes and had some fun events. In reflection and the spirit of transparency, we have some changes coming to Infiniti Grid that we want you to know about.

Due to real life health issues and time constraints, some founders need to make changes in the day to day operations. Families and real life need attention and the reality of becoming a full-time endeavor has proven very difficult for most of us.

So, are we closing the grid?

That is a definite no!

But we are morphing into something different from the current operations. We have a shiny new and powerful dedicated server on order that will prove to give us a kick in performance. We are heading to VAR regions for much of the grid. We are backing up regions and inventories so that they can be installed on the new server. We will likely need people to re-register their accounts and backend work will be looked at for the merge. Leck is working all that out and more will be announced as we get closer to that point. Those changes were discussed in two office hours meetings that occurred yesterday (12/6/18) on the grid. So that recaps what you all knew up to this point.

However, There is more though.

Going back to the Founders, who simply cannot maintain a full time or long hours position on the grid, we came up with what most of the Founders are happy with. We will be dissolving the LLC part of the business. We will be eliminating the Founders program and the grid will continue

as a non-profit, non-commercial entity. We will be offering 2X2 and 4X4 VARregions (as of this writing, subject to change) and will offer them for a suggested donation price. The donations will go to keep the server operational (and expand if that were to happen)  with the remainder of any monies earned over actual cost, going to fund projects within the OpenSimulator Community itself; developers, specialized events that benefit all of OS, a webpage that many of us utilize within our grids to promote ourselves, etc.

We want to be a part of the OpenSimulator community versus a competitor within the market that is already over saturated. We will let you know each month beginning in January, if the donations for regions covered our costs along with how much was donated and to what project within the OpenSimulator community the additional monies went to.

We do want to make it very clear, that although some founders are still deciding their plans, we are continuing with our grid.

We have extended an offer towards one real world organization to remain with us at no cost due to their wonderful years of work within the virtual community at large.  We are extending an offer to those currently with us the ability to keep their region and/or parcel (which parcels will be larger after the 1st of the year due to moving mainland to a VAR) at a suggested donated price.   We will maintain our Radio Station Region and stream so that will be able to grow and continue (more information on that as DJ Robert gets set up and we work with him to grow his dream).

We will also continue with our mentor/learning area for those hypergrid enabled. Anybody can come and learn through the self-paced courses, which we have been given permission by some of the most creative minds in Second Life to utilize their materials. Ivory Tower Library of Primitives, the Particle Laboratory and Robin Wood are three of the Second Life entities that have given us permission to use their teaching materials. We also have an open-air class area for anyone that wants to teach to utilize for free.  If you want to teach a class, schedule it with Macphisto Angelus after the server move.

Satyr Farms will be a big piece of the grid puzzle. Farmer Misty will be doing that as well as getting back to her love of landscaping. Smurfs will be forced into labor, goats will be born, food will be grown, no telling what all will crop up (get it? Crop up?)   Leck will have RP areas like Sci Fi, large areas for boating, Flying and recreation.

We want a place where everyone, including us,  can grow in building, animating, mesh, whatever tickles our fancy. We still intend to offer Gloebits for someone wanting to sell their creations from their region and Podex may be offered as well. We also hope to contribute freebies not available anywhere else. Selea Core gave permission for us to offer her freebies, which we will likely do as well, along with much of the amazing Linda Kellie pieces that we will always be thankful for. LK has had a hand in starting just about every world out there with content she graciously gave away at no charge to any of us.

There are many opportunities involved for the future that involve giving back, having fun and simply being within our grid.  This applies to us as well as anyone who wishes to remain, visit or join us. We are also fully aware that at times, we will need to carry the server cost ourselves.   Because of that, we do plan on limiting future regions based on what we personally are able to afford server cost wise out of pocket on a monthly basis. We will have at least a one month nest egg, hopefully two which will carry us during times of emergencies and if for any reason, we need to close our doors permanently, we would have funds to give proper notice to residents.

So, what does this all mean? The commercial aspect of “selling” regions is over. The LLC will be dissolved, and our new focus will be on creativity, fun and being a part of the OpenSimulator community.  We hope you join us for this new endeavor within our grid.

Happy Holidays! Welcome to the New Year and New life of what Infiniti grid will become.

We still invite you to “Set home to here”

There are days as one of the Infiniti Bloggers, that I look back and go yeah “we didn’t think that through so very carefully”  but then I remember that we are a new grid, learning our way and figuring it all out as we go along. Sometimes, we are going to make a few odd choices and other times, we will seriously nail it and rock this grid thing.

Now is one of the times, in hindsight, we wish we could take a few things back. So here goes, Tech Tuesday Blogging at its Infiniti Finest!

What’s happening Tech Wise?

Well, when we first started the grid, we did a bit of research, talked to a few people and decided that we were going to go with an OpenSimulator 0.9.2.x dev fork.  It was the latest, the greatest and most advanced technology in Open Sim and hey….who doesn’t want that right?

Come to find out, once we started getting residents, farms and such…..we actually don’t want that.   We found out the hard way that the dev fork was not, in our experience, compatible with various things and the Satyr Farm is one of them for certain aspects of the game.  Namely the NPCs. For some using the farming game, the NPCs are a necessity. Now, a few might say ‘screw it, just don’t have the NPCs and people can farm on their own or they can just go somewhere else.”  Except that is not part of our goal as a service provider.

Our primary goal is to be compatible with the rest of the HyperGrid community as well as offer our residents the ability to do as they wish on our grid.  This makes it so much easier for everyone. From those that wish to live or work on our grid to those who simply want to visit as well as our residents who want to travel around and visit various places.

(I might have snuck into Leck's office to write this post....)

So what does this mean?

It means we are implementing a reversion to the OpenSimulator Release.   I know right? Rolling back just means that we have to rework some coding and other pieces of the puzzle to bring us back in line with the rest of the Hypergrid Community.  While doing this, we are also going to dedicate a module to our inventory database as well as the FSassets database, which means it will be more streamlined and consistent. We’ve also gone ahead and contracted a second dedicated server that is high functioning and will bring us into the new year with the growth that we are expecting.

What does this mean for you?

Not too much.  Seriously, most of this is Leck digging down for a few days and working some buttons and codes (my tech speak going on there). He’ll be taking OARs and IARs which he will load up to each region prior to opening log in. He’ll be moving inventory to the new module and bringing regions online through the new server and original server.

We are anticipating zero issues with the roll back, server move, etc.  However, as with anything technically involved….we cannot guarantee there won’t be any.   We are going to give ourselves a two day frame with grid downtime in order to have this completed properly.

Is there are a place I can ask questions, I have so many?

Leck will also have two different meetings on Thursday, December 6th in world with questions and answers which will be hosted on Mentor Isle.  Times for the meetings are 12pm grid time and 5pm grid time (3pm and 8pm Eastern) You can also ask questions in Discord or even here in the comments section.   We do request that you ask them in our open channels versus private messages that way if anyone else has the same question, they might see it and receive their answer.

When will this happen?

As of right now, we’re scheduling all this to take place beginning Monday, December 10th and going through Tuesday, December 11th with holding Wednesday, December 12th on reserve for an additional day of the grid being down, if need be (hopefully we won’t need the third day!)

We truly appreciate your understanding and patience and we'll be updating here on the blog as well as in Discord throughout the grid down time.

As always, we hope you continue to set home here.
